This phone doesn t run Android, but it can run Android apps

Android and iOS are not the only mobile operating systems on smartphones these days.

In addition to the PinePhone, a phone that runs Linux, there is also the Librem 5 phone from Purism, which runs on PureOS, a free open source operating system.

PureOS is not based on Android, but that doesn’t mean it can’t take advantage of the Android ecosystem.

In a blog post today, Purism announced that Anbox is now compatible with the Librem 5. Similar to what Google does on ChromeOS, Anbox runs in a container with Android. This means users can access additional free applications developed for Android while maintaining PureOS ‘privacy policy.

The ultimate goal is to make setting up the Android emulation process as easy as moving an Android image file to the Anbox folder and rebooting.

Now that Android apps are running on the Librem 5, the device "designed to protect your digital life" could get really interesting.
