A team of researchers from University College London, led by Dr. Lidia Galdino, set a new record for internet speed. The maximum transfer was 178 terabits per second. To achieve a new record, the team led by Dr. Lidia Galdino cooperated with two companies: Xtera and KDDI Research. A fiber optic connection was used with a longer wavelength of light (a wider range of colored light in the range of 16.8THz) than in the case of a traditional optical fiber (4.5THz). Crucially, researchers at University College London say their higher wavelength fiber-optic connection can be seamlessly integrated into the current commercial infrastructure used by ordinary internet users. Instead of installing a new optical fiber, it is enough to replace the amplifiers located every 40 – 100 km. The cost of replacing one such amplifier is about PLN 80,000.
