Huawei: sharp slump in smartphone production expected

It is undisputed that the US ban has reached Huawei so slowly. The production of the Huawei Mate 40 series is also affected . But the effects are expected to be severe in the next year.

Huawei is currently the world’s largest smartphone maker in terms of shipments. The company eventually managed to overtake Samsung after ranking second or third on the list of leading smartphone manufacturers for years.

However, the company will not be able to maintain its rank. In fact, it seems difficult to see the brand among the top smartphone manufacturers.

According to a report, Huawei plans to produce around 50 million smartphones in 2021. That equates to a massive drop of 74 percent compared to what the Chinese manufacturer is expected to ship this year.

Just for comparison: the company shipped around 240 million units of its smartphones last year. For the current year, the company is expected to ship around 190 million units of its phones.

The main reason smartphone production was slowed down is because of the sanctions imposed by the United States, which have made it almost impossible for the company to continue making phones. Thanks to these sanctions, Samsung will be the big winner in 2021 and is expected to ship more than 300 million smartphones.

It all started in May last year when the US government banned Huawei and restricted the use of Google’s Android or any of its services and apps on Huawei or Honor smartphones, along with a few other restrictions.

Most recently, the US government tightened restrictions and added new sanctions against Huawei and dozens of its subsidiaries by banning Huawei from sourcing chipsets from Qualcomm or MediaTek. TSMC , which makes Huawei’s Kirin chipset, has also been restricted from providing its services.

Currently, the company is relying on SMIC to make low-cost Kirin chipsets that can be used in budget and mid-size smartphones. However, the US government also plans to ban SMIC . Should this happen, Huawei will have virtually no access to chipsets for its smartphones.
