Time to say goodbye to Duo slowly. Google wants to consolidate its messengers

The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on the popularity of services such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Google Meet also benefited from it – which is said to become the main IM service from Google according to the latest plan.

Today, Google has quite a few communications services on offer. The most popular are the Duo messenger for video calling, pre-installed on every Android phone, and the Meet messenger, developed mainly (but not only) as a tool for group videoconferencing. The latter saw a big surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic – companies using G Suite for work naturally chose Meet as their default meeting tool.

Now, according to unconfirmed information, Google intends to combine two services into one universal. It would use technical solutions from Duo to support augmented reality and low requirements for the Internet connection. And from Meeta, useful functions for businesses.

This alleged merger is to be part of something bigger, i.e. Google’s internal restructuring, in which consumer services are to be taken over by Javier Soltero, who currently manages the development of G Suite. The project that aims to connect Duo and Meet is internally called Meet. The first was reported by 9to5Google .

The editorial office even managed to get a comment from a Google representative. We only learn from it that something is up. In this statement, the company said it was very committed to the further development of Duo. However, it does not in any way refer to the question about connecting Duo with Meet – that is, I do not confirm, I do not deny .

It’s worth noting that Duo is an application available on almost any Android device that usually cannot be uninstalled without combining. Assuming it’s updated to Duet, Meet or whatever the end product is called – that alone could bring many new users to the service.
