Cloud hosting combines the advantages of shared hosting with the best features of cloud computing. The implementation of cloud technology has allowed the largest providers to break with the myth of hosting plagued by low performance and failure rate once and for all. How is cloud hosting different from traditional hosting?

In classic web hosting, many clients’ websites are run on a single server, the failure of which leads to a service outage. Each such server has limited resources, so when one website starts generating excessive traffic, the performance of other sites is noticeably slowed down. It’s very easy to imagine it with your own computer. However, they do it similarly to airlines, i.e. with overbooking, so it can often happen that the server is too busy to display a given page. Additionally, as customers, we do not know how many more applications compete for server memory and CPU. It can be a risky game, especially if we take into account the possibility of a machine failure.

Challenge: how to combine variable load and security?

The number of people who find our website may change drastically. It is not just about the day and night cycle. Various promotional campaigns can also attract additional visitors. Because if a company invests in a competition or promotion, the last thing it would want are dissatisfied users who have to kiss the virtual door handle.

Transfer to the cloud

In such situations, cloud hosting is much better. It differs from traditional hosting quite fundamentally. Where the client was permanently assigned to one machine, the cloud introduces the entire cluster, which allows for much better resource management.

The query first goes to the load balancer, whose task is to direct the user to the least busy machine from the pool, e.g. 100 working servers. The load is dynamically distributed among the working virtual machines, so even a sharp increase in interest will not overload the website. If necessary, the number of servers we use can be extended. Therefore, the noisy neighbor effect described above, where one application consumes most of the machine’s resources and causes problems with the operation of the others, will not occur.

We can even distribute support for several websites between different machines. Thanks to this, we are sure that the applications will not cannibalize, which will ensure smooth operation of each of them. It is crucial when, for example, we have a website used by the company’s management. They can’t wait for their chosen desktop to load, so it’s a good idea to direct dedicated resources to handling it.

We also don’t have to worry about server repair and downtime. We will not feel one machine disconnected because we will be immediately redirected to another. This will help not only with the maintenance of machines, but also in the event of a breakdown, when we are quickly switched to a working machine.

In this way, the service provider can smoothly manage the power of the cluster, which gives great opportunities to adapt to customer needs. It can control computing power and available RAM depending on the time of day and night and automatically respond to increasing demand. Thanks to this, customers will not be left in the ice when a single machine refuses to cooperate. Here we are dealing with an entire server farm, which also gives us access to an incomparably larger pool of computing power than in the case of a VPS.

Why aren’t we all in the cloud yet?

Cloud hosting wins with flexibility, speed and security, but requires the hosting company to make a large investment. Here you don’t buy just one server, but their entire clusters. Add to this the cost of the license, which should explain why only the most renowned providers choose cloud computing.

How is it on the Polish market?

There is no shortage of hosting offers on the Polish market. Most use traditional hosting, which has to overcome the limitations described above.
