One of Apple’s cooler ideas is that of using the on-screen space bar as a cursor control button. Now the idea is copied by Microsoft in its SwiftKey keyboard.

SwiftKey is one of the first things I install on a new tablet or phone if it doesn’t have this keyboard installed. The on-screen keyboard, taken over by Microsoft years ago, knows me so well and my typing style that teaching this new program does not smile at all. In addition, apart from this unusual relationship, Swiftkey offers a lot of cool features and tools – from nonsense in the form of a GIF search engine to a great swipe mechanism or instant access to pasting business documents. And there is more.

SwiftKey does have one downside though, which is why I checked and tested other keyboards for something better. Cursor control is basically non-existent in this keyboard. You can turn on the arrow buttons, but they take up space unnecessarily. The only thing left is to move the cursor on the screen by hand, which is not the most convenient.

The space takes the role of the cursor. The SwiftKey keyboard takes a good pattern from the Apple keyboard.

I rate the iOS keyboard quite poorly. In my opinion, this is a fairly primitive tool, the simplicity of which can be explained only by the righteous desire to provide the most universal tool as possible to the widest possible group of users – so that they are not distracted by any additional functions that they probably do not need. However, one of Apple’s ideas deserves a mention.

This is the replacement of the largest button on the keyboard with something like a trackpad. After holding down the space bar with your finger, you can move this finger – and the cursor will start to move in the same direction. Simple, obvious, convenient and intuitive.

Now the same thing goes to SwiftKey after many years. For now, for the beta version of this keyboard, and for now only on Android – but it will certainly also be available on iOS and iPadOS and Windows. It is not only clear when in the production version, although knowing Microsoft, we should not wait more than a few weeks.
