What do most browsers live from? After all, these are usually free applications, and any advertisements that could be found in them basically disqualify such a browser. The answer lies in ancillary services and partnership agreements. Some browsers offer, for example, a paid VPN service. Others greet us with links to various websites and web applications from the very beginning. This exposure was almost always bought from the browser provider.
Mozilla has a similar business model. Its strategic partner is Google – in return for financial support, Mozilla sets Google Search as the default application for searching the Web in Firefox. Google also works on similar principles with other browsers – a similar layout has, among others, Apple and its Safari.
Firefox is getting closer to irrelevance. Nevertheless, Google decided to give him another chance.
Firefox today is the default web browser basically only on some Linux versions. As if that was not enough, it is built with proprietary technology, instead of like most of the competition on Chromium. So it has a lot of problems with acquiring the user base as well as with the development of its browser engine – where more and more effort, instead of its development, goes to fixing compatibility errors with applications optimized for Chromium.
The effects are unfortunately visible. Firefox controls only 7.83 percent. the market of browsers for personal computers and only 0.72 percent. the much more important market of browsers for mobile devices. There is no trace of the splendor of the former power. At most a mention that it is mainly thanks to Mozilla that today we do not have to deal with the monopoly of Internet Explorer.
Despite this, Google decided to give Firefox one more chance. By default, charitable: the deal once again stipulates that Firefox will be paired with Google Search by default. In addition, Google will invariably declare that it does not appropriate the Internet for itself, and the traffic to its search engine does not come only from the dominant Chrome and the Google mobile application.
Google has pledged to pay Mozilla 400 million annually over the next five years, which is 90 percent. all of her income. Firefox developers have half a decade to figure out how to successfully return to the competition for the web browser market. May this time be enough.
