iOS from version to version tries to better protect our privacy, which is undoubtedly welcome. I look with much less sympathy on applications on this system, which – which iOS 14 clearly shows – have excessive appetite for our data.
The clipboard in the operating system is such a temporary data storage. Which specifically? All those that we copy or cut for later pasting. For example, when on the iPhone we hold the finger for a longer time, press the copy button, then before we paste this text to another place is stored in the said clipboard.
Selected applications on our phone have access to the clipboard. In some cases, this has some justification – just like access to the location of the phone, its camera or microphone, access to the Clipboard can increase the usability of a given app. However, this should only be allocated when it is actually necessary. After all, the Clipboard may contain stuck personal data or other content that we don’t want to share with anyone.
iOS 14 will alert you when an application looks into the Clipboard. It turns out that there can be many such warnings.
iOS 14 will not appear until the third quarter of this year. Already today, however, we can test its early version, which has been made available to developers so that they can test the compatibility of their applications with the new system edition. Reports from testers are quite disturbing. We have become used to the fact that applications from large and respected suppliers are safe – and we should be careful about those from bush companies . Nothing could be more wrong.
Appetite for our private data from the Clipboard are also programs that we instinctively trust almost completely. The list of shame spying on us applications is constantly growing. And only some of their creators shake their heads with ash and promise change. Applications that abuse their permissions include:
TikTok
TikTok is a Chinese social network that is gaining incredible popularity around the world – especially among younger phone users who share short video clips within it. When it was noticed that the TikToka application without looking into the Clipboard unnecessarily, its creators explained that it was not their fault, but the Google Ads advertising module they use to make money. They have already committed in April to upgrade the module to the new version. It still hasn’t happened.
Viber
Belonging to Japanese Rakuten, this popular messenger has won the favor of users with the ease of use and quality of voice and video calls.
AccuWeather
Why this very popular weather forecast display application looks into our Clipboard? Nobody knows except its creators.
LinkedIn
Microsoft’s social network for employees and recruiters should not look into the Clipboard, although it does so intensely. This is admitted by LinkedIn himself, who has already apologized for the error and explained it. LinkedIn claims that this is a malfunction of the text field mechanism and that no data captured from the Clipboard is sent to its servers. As proof of this, he even published the source code of the module and committed himself to quickly fix the defect . What are we still waiting for?
AliExpress
AliExpress is an extremely popular Chinese e-commerce platform. That is, the place where we often glue the details of our payment card or home delivery address. AliExpress must necessarily know this data – but full access to the Clipboard for its creators is something we would probably prefer to avoid. For now, however, popular Ali is not planning changes.
mBank
Changes are also not planned by mBank, which – as it explains – introduced a preview of the Clipboard to the application to ensure the correct operation of its application. It’s a serious bank, so I really take my word for it. Although explaining why the iOS application requires access to the Clipboard and why this one for Android does not, it still causes me some confusion.
PUBG Mobile
Why the extremely popular battle-royale game access to the system Clipboard? This is only known by the South Korean creators of this production, who do not feel the need to explain their entitlement for today. Maybe because the splendor of their case seems to be dying out anyway – PUBG is constantly losing the sympathy of Fortnite players.
These are just examples. Some iPhone applications have far too much access to our privacy.
And this means that subsequent attempts to stop the desire of application developers on the part of Apple should only be praised. After all, it is undoubtedly in the interest of us, users. It is a pity that the company reacts so slowly and only now. Well, at least it does at all, which cannot be said for all its competitors.
