If you read these words, then you are not celebrating. Today is the Digital Detox Day

On July 15, we celebrated World Mobile Phone Day, but you probably didn’t notice it, staring at the shiny screens of your smartphones.

If you read these words, it also means that you missed the Digital Detox Day, so after reading, I encourage you at least to walk. Just leave the phone at home.

Digital Detox Day – what’s this about?

In this way, the Polish Digital Sovereignty Card wants to encourage us to give up all this digitality for one day, show our middle finger to Mark Zuckerberg and other creators of social behemoths, and come back to life for a while.

Of course, the Digital Detox Day itself is the same "holiday" as the International Black Cat Day or Chocolate Day – it should not be an opportunity to celebrate, but is intended to build a universal awareness that the problem exists and we must oppose it.

The problem is easily underestimated, even if statistics regarding the daily amount of time spent in front of the screens are increasingly alarming . After all, digitization has become an integral part of our lives, right? The dichotomy of the real and virtual world no longer exists – today these are two interpenetrating entities entwined in an inseparable embrace.

So talking about "digital detox" and "logging out of life" may sound – especially for the younger generation – like a boomer pitu-pitu from the cycle "there used to be times, now there are no more times".

And yet the Digital Detox Day also aims to make us aware that this increase in time spent in front of the screen is … not exactly our choice.

Every day, users face an unequal battle with applications and services that have been designed from the beginning to the end to attract our attention and make us addicted to each other. Corporations have trained us like Pavlov’s dogs – at the sound of the notification we throw everything to check what is displayed on the screen. And almost all of us claim that we control it. Meanwhile – as the creators of the Digital Detox Day argue – this belief in control is one of the basic manipulation techniques used by digital giants.

Is digital detox at all possible?

Well, as with everything – it depends. The virtual and real world have become one, so often the withdrawal of the former is impossible because it will take place at the expense of the latter.

However, it is healthy to set limits and although from time to time try to limit the time spent on social media, the time spent watching movies on the Internet, or put a stop at the constant stream of information that makes us all fear of what passes us (FOMO).

Finding the balance between using technology and "real" life is not a matter of one day, but a daily, conscious effort.

And here is the question for you, dear readers – how do you control the digital aspect of your life (if any)? What do you do to avoid falling into the FOMO spiral artificially driven by tools designed to make us addicted to each other? Let me know in the comments.
