How is TV for players different from TV for normal people? Samsung Q95T – features and facilities


When someone dear and important leaves, we feel a great emptiness in our hearts. We stand in the window, wave the handkerchief and stop the tears coming to our eyes. More or less in this way I said goodbye to the Samsung Q95T TV, taken by courier after a few weeks of pleasant tests. Thanks to them I checked what Samsung has prepared in the new TV line for players.

This year, Samsung is introducing three giant new products in its TV series : 120 Hz panels, HDMI 2.1 sockets and MultiView technology. In addition, the company develops previously offered facilities for players, continues to minimize the delay, and also makes life easier for console owners in several other ways. First things first. Here is a subjective review of the most interesting new products created for players on Samsung TVs for 2020:

120 Hz TV panel

Not counting the cheapest Q60T, all new Samsung TVs from the Q line have received television panels capable of refreshing the image with a maximum frequency of 120 Hz.

For lovers of movies and series it will not matter much, but for fans of games it is very important news. It means that Samsung TVs are compatible with video games – console and PC – displayed in 120 frames per second. This is especially appreciated by lovers of racing games and tactical shootings. In the near future it will also be important for owners of PS5 and XSX consoles.

VRR (Variable Refresh Rate)

VRR is a variable refresh rate technology. Thanks to it, the TV can automatically adjust the refresh rate to the content displayed on the screen from an external device, any user intervention is not necessary.

For example, when we first start the game running at 30 frames per second, and then the game running at 60 frames per second, Samsung will automatically adjust the refresh rate. Thanks to this, we will avoid the effect of tearing the image, always playing with the parameters optimally selected for a specific game. VRR also works when connected to a PC. Valorant in 120 frames on the big screen – yum. This has been achieved.

One Connect module

One Connect module is in my opinion one of Samsung’s greater advantages over competing TV producers. Patented technology closes some of the television components in the external box together with all the sockets and ports. We can then store such a bar, for example, behind the TV cabinet, thanks to which only one thin, translucent cable always leads from the TV. In turn, the TV itself becomes slimmer.

Comfort is more important to me than aesthetics. Thanks to the external box it is much easier to connect consoles and other devices to the TV. No need to stretch towards the back of the screen. I really appreciate it from the perspective of the owner of PS4, XONE and Switch, but also several grabbers capturing the image.

HDMI 2.1 for PS5 and XSX

One of the most important new products for 2020: Samsung TVs have received the HDMI socket in the latest version 2.1. Thanks to it, it is possible to send video in 4K quality with a maximum of 120 frames per second. This is a new standard that will be used by the upcoming Sony and Microsoft consoles.

With 120 Hz panels and HDMI 2.1 connectors, this year’s Samsung line is fully prepared for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The TVs will allow you to play in 4K quality with 120 frames per second. Of course, if the video game itself allows it. The new generation default standard is 4K and 60 frames. However, I am convinced that some games – especially online shootings – will offer the possibility of rolling games in as much as 120 fps. Samsung are ready for it.

It is a pity that only one HDMI 2.1 socket has been implemented in each QLED 2020 TV. If you’re planning to buy both new consoles, you’ll have to make a difficult decision.

Automatic recognition

Like banality, and still enjoys. The Tizen operating system easily recognizes all leading console brands. Q95T automatically detected the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. He also replaced the tiles with HDMI sources for the icons of these platforms, organizing and systematizing the shortcut bar.

Of course, this is only cosmetics, but how pleasant. I like the fact that I choose the Switch logo on the red screen on the main TV screen and the Nintendo console turns on automatically. These are small details, but by such small details you can meet an experienced manufacturer polishing his product.

MultiView <3

I’ve been waiting for this Picture in Picture (PiP) mode for years. But for years! Although the first TVs offering PiP appeared in the 90s, the technology was far from ideal. In the additional window we could only view selected content. In addition, there was a problem with sound – simultaneous audio from both sources was out of the question.

MultiView is a PiP for the 21st century. The solution made such a big, positive and so good impression on me that I decided to devote a separate text to it, which will appear on Spider’s Web any day. I will write here that Samsung has dispelled my biggest fears. Streaming from Android, streaming from iPhone, window scalability, various sound sources, automatic detection of player windows, even an audio mixer – everything works almost flawlessly. Several times the TV broke the connection with my smartphone, but I can get over it.

Automatic Game Mode and unbelievably low lag

Samsung Q95T automatically switches to Game Mode when we use the console connected to it. We significantly reduce the delay by cutting the input lag to less than 10 ms. What’s amazing, the result below 10 ms can be maintained even by playing in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with HDR10 image. The descent to 1080p is just 6 ms delay.

There is no doubt that Samsung offers some of the best, if not the best values ​​for delay on the market. I was afraid that along with the higher refresh rate in the 4K standard there would be problems in this field. Quite the opposite – temporary cuts are stronger than I could have expected. Revelation.

QLED 2020 series – is it worth thinking about changing your TV set?

If you are only a lover of movies and series – probably not. You probably already have a TV capable of displaying content in 4K, which you are more or less satisfied with. When assessing image quality, we won’t see any visual revolution in 2020. Therefore, if a new purchase is not necessary, there is no need to force up your list of expenses.

The situation is completely different from the perspective of console players. Samsung offers TV sets fully ready for the advent of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Both platforms will appear on the market this year. With any of the QLED 2020 models, you will be able to fully use the potential of these machines. HDMI 2.1 and 120 Hz panels are a big thing in the world of console players. Through these elements for the first time in five years I am really thinking about buying a new TV. Unfortunately, the 65-inch Q95T is out of my reach. But Q70T and Q80T are very tempting.
