A special machine owned by Elon Musk has just finished drilling a 2.6 kilometer long tunnel in the heart of Las Vegas. From January 2021, Tesla will be driving there, avoiding traffic jams on the surface of the city. The billionaire also presented a project of an underground passenger station.

The Boring Machine (official name) task of The Boring Company was anything but boring. Elon Musk’s giant drill bit cut two one-way tunnels with a total length of 2.6 kilometers, right in the heart of Las Vegas. The machine was digging at a speed of 30 meters a day – supposedly twice as fast as most of this type of advanced equipment.

These two one-way tunnels are the cornerstone of the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop project – an underground transportation system linking the LVCC campus with the West Hall under construction. With its help, future visitors to the Convention Center will be able to move underground, without traffic jams, and completely free. Walking from one point of the Center to another, usually 20-30 minutes on foot, will turn into a 2-minute, air-conditioned ride.

Of course, the underground journey will be carried out using autonomous Tesla cars.

In January 2021, the vehicles are to be driven by drivers, but will soon become fully independent. Tesla are to travel through underground tunnels at a speed of 65 km / h. The full fleet using the Las Vegas Convention Center is to include 62 autonomous vehicles that will carry from 3 to 16 people at the same time, depending on the model. In total, the system is to serve up to 4,400 people per hour.

We will go down to the underground tunnels using the escalator of one of the three stations that function as a passenger station. The solution is a bit like the metro, and Elon Musk has just published a visualization of one of such centers, with the note "coming soon" (seen above). At the same time, the billionaire points out that the tunnels can be expanded. Consequently, in the future, they can connect other parts of the city, just like a traditional metro does. Such an underground loop would even reach the airport.

The billionaire emphasizes that he founded The Boring Company out of frustration with modern public transport. The Underground Loop is one of Musk’s solutions to facilitate and accelerate travel in large agglomerations. The Boring Company has even developed its own drilling machines, which in the near future are to drill tunnels not only under Vegas, but also other metropolises in the US and the world. Loop can be a solution where the construction of a traditional and extensive metro is not possible for various reasons.

The total cost of building the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop is $ 53 million.
