We test in practice Huawei Video – a service with thousands of movies, programs and series

Huawei Video from a simple movie player has transformed into a VOD customer. The prices are low and the offer is very rich. Is there a catch?

Huawei Video was once a normal application for playing video files. There was no point in mentioning it – every phone and tablet is equipped with something like this. Oh, a simple program that lets us play an AVI, MP4 file or another format. It’s just that for some time Huawei has been investing heavily in the development of proprietary services, ultimately wanting to offer the ecosystem at least at Apple level. And he is doing great.

One such investment is changing Huawei Video from a simple file player to a full-fledged service. This has been working for some time in Poland, and Huawei itself has made a very wise decision regarding the content available there. Due to the fact that the company is just beginning its conquest of the VOD market instead of fooling around and introducing the service with its own productions and fighting for licenses for other materials with market giants, he decided to cooperate.

The downside of this solution is the lack of so-called Originals – on Huawei Video we will not find content unavailable on any other platforms. In return, however, we can browse the offer of many other services that Huawei combines into one rich offer with a uniform payment system.

What content, movies and series are available on the Huawei Video service?

Huawei Video has been enriched by over 50 thousand new titles, including 30,000 free content. This is also data from April this year, the numbers certainly increased. Where do the content come from? The list of partners looks impressive.

Filmbox and Rakuten TV offer the latest movie productions – including Joker, Bad Boys for Life, Sonic film adaptation or even the latest Star Wars installments – as well as a rich collection of classic movies such as the Android Hunter and classic Fast and Furious installments. If we prefer facts from fiction, hundreds of reports from BBC News are available as well as fashion material from Bazaar TV or documents from The Explorers.

For the youngest Huawei has prepared dozens of animated series from ToonGoggles. Music lovers will appreciate materials from Stingray, and so a mine of concert recordings of various artists – from Rick Astley to Slayer. And let’s not forget about hundreds of thousands of amateur video clips from DailyMotion users.

So the choice is big. We will find here short and long productions. Film news and forever young classics. And also cartoons for our children, educational programs and information services.

The interface is friendly and legible.

The most important element is the bottom beam with individual application sections. The home page is simply a catalog of all available content. Popular presents us with free materials sorted by popularity. Channels are a catalog again, but this time with a division into partners – because we may want, for example, to watch content exclusively from the BBC or Rakuten. The store is a place of paid content, and My account is used – as the name suggests – to manage the account and application.

In every place in the application there is also a search engine at the top of the screen, and in the catalog sections you can additionally filter content by categories – movies, cartoons, reportages, series, and so on. In addition, the application visually suits me very well, although of course it is a matter of taste. Parents will also appreciate the parental control function: it is possible to configure the application in such a way that materials inappropriate for a given age of our children are available only after providing an additional PIN, known only to us.

The player itself is also comfortable. And, what’s welcome, it supports gesture control. For example: to scroll through content, just move your finger horizontally. We adjust the brightness and volume with a similar gesture, but vertically. Double click means pause and resume playback.

How much does it cost and why is it so expensive? You’ll be amazed at how affordable content on Huawei Video is.

Due to the connection with partners, there are no uniform prices throughout the service. Much depends on who the material comes from. For example, not all content can be viewed offline without a network connection due to the license of some partners. Fortunately, the price list is very attractive: the most expensive production I found cost me 22 PLN in HD version and 18 PLN in SD version. A significant part of the materials is free, and most costs cheaper – about half of the above amounts.

It can be even cheaper. Owners of MatePad Pro tablets and P40, P40 Pro and P40 lite phones will receive a very nice gift from Huaweia: up to 10 movies for free on the Huawei Video service. And there is no catch in it.

Accounts and subscriptions can be created and purchased from the Huaweia application. The only exception here is the Rakuten service, in which we must manually create an account on its home page to be able to play Huawei video content.

And what exactly are these premium content? As it turns out, Huawei Video does not lack the latest news. We will watch the latest installment of Frozen or Fast and Furious – with subtitles, a teacher or dubbing. God’s body awarded with many distinctions? Of course it is. Star Wars saga? Available. But there are also older productions – recently on Huawei Video I remembered the iconic Polish Dogs and the absolutely sensational war drama Pluto and the excellent Downtown Abbey series.

I have a small request to Huaweia. Only one.

Huawei Video, which is logical and natural, is only available on Huawei devices. We won’t find it for an operating system other than EMUI. The service is designed to encourage us to buy these somewhat great devices and – at least for now – it’s difficult to have a problem with it. However, in the future I would like to be able to watch content from Huawei Video directly from my TV using a dedicated application. Today it is also possible, but only if we stream this movie from our phone.

However, this is already wishful thinking and an attempt to find some disadvantages of Huawei Video that it would not be so sweet throughout the text. Basically, I don’t see any faults, mistakes or deficiencies. I’m not sure if it is worth buying a phone or tablet from Huawei by Huawei Video itself – but I have no doubt that this is fantastic added value. I urge Huaweia owners to give the service a chance – I am convinced that you will not be disappointed.
