Hyundai: New heat pump technology explained
Almost two weeks ago there were reports that a new heat pump technology from Hyundai and KIA will revolutionize electric car efficiency in cold temperatures . Now the manufacturer explains the new technology in detail.
The new technology consists of a compressor, an evaporator and a condenser and is an innovation in heat management, as the manufacturer has now explained .
"The waste heat from the vehicle’s electrical components is absorbed by the heat pump and used to heat the interior without significantly influencing the electrical range. By absorbing additional waste heat, which is no longer obtained exclusively from electrical components such as drive motors, on-board chargers and inverters, but also from the battery pack, the heat pump ensures that less electricity is used when the vehicle heater is used. Hyundai: Thanks to new heat pump technology, the same range even in winter
The heat generated by the components is used to evaporate liquid refrigerant. Then the gas is pressed out of the compressor at high pressure, passed into a condenser and converted back into the liquid state. This creates additional heat energy, which is recovered by the heat pump and can be used to heat the interior.
A nice side effect of the new heat pump technology is increased efficiency of the heating and air-conditioning system, lower battery power consumption and thus a longer range of the electric car.
At temperatures of -7 degrees, vehicles with the new technology with the air conditioning switched on should still have 90 percent of the range as at 26 degrees.
