Fully electric BMW M5 with 1,006 hp in progress
BMW is planning a purely electric version of its M5 sports car model. BMW will offer a 1,006 hp electric sedan with the next generation of the car.
Since last year there have been rumors that the main models from BMW – not just special i models – should also appear as purely electrical versions. Now Car Magazine is reporting that it is really happening.
The all-electric M5 will use a honking 135 kWh package with a 400 volt battery system, which will later be upgraded to an 800 volt system with a charging power of 350 kW. The predicted WLTP range is reported to be 700 kilometers.
Internal documents show that the BMW M5 EV will use three engines. There will be a 250 kW electric motor at the front and two more for the rear wheels. This should result in a torque-dependent output of 1,006 hp at the end.
BMW recently introduced its flexible manufacturing approach, which enables cars with combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and EVs to be manufactured with the same architecture and on the same production lines. It starts with the next series of electric vehicles.
BMW M, the in-house high-performance department of the German automobile manufacturer, is known for modifying drive trains, suspensions, aerodynamics and vehicle bodies in such a way that they become even faster. The M variants usually follow a year after the mainstream version comes on the market.
The next new and improved generation of the BMW 5 Series is not expected until mid-2023, so the M versions (including a fully electric model) are on the schedule by 2024.
